Sunscare forbrave Richard
East Kilbride ASC swimmer Richard Laird recently took part in the British Swimming Open Water Training Camp and Competition Experience, swimming in the Mediterranean coastal waters off Majorca.
And sunstroke almost curtailed his trip.
Literally starting in the deep end on Sunday with the five kilometre Colonia Classic Town to Town race, Richard was there to develop his open water skills in what was his first British representative selection.
He completed the race in 14th place out of a field of 45 under a blistering hot sun in a very creditable 1 hour 3 mins 16 secs, with world championship gold medallist Rob Muffels taking first place in the highly respected field.
Sadly, the heat took its toll on Richard and after unexpectedly collapsing that evening he spent the night in hospital as a precaution against sunstroke.
Thankfully, despite this unwanted interruption to his week, Richard was medically passed fit to continue with the camp after a day’s rest and recuperation.
It is remarkable therefore, and perhaps testament to the club values of determination and hard work, that Richard then took part in the 10 kilometre ‘Marathon’ Colonia Classic race on the Thursday.
He completed the race in 2 hours 7 mins 25 secs, once again coming 14th, with Rob Muffels also taking gold medal spot for the second time.
In a nice touch, Richard found time the day after returning home to help out at the East Kilbride club’s long course gala, handing out water to officials and helpers to keep them hydrated, perhaps more than mindful of his recent experience in the sun.
