Firebugs torch lock-ups Residents of Westwood and The Murray are up in arms after anti-social youths set lock-ups on fire causing £10,000 worth of damage.

Our online readers debated whether or not the rundown garages should be demolished.

Isabel Braidwood posted: “Why not just knock them all down.”

James Gillespie replied by saying: “If the council knock down the lock-ups people like myself who use a lock-up will be forced to park on the already overwhelmed streets. They [South Lanarkshire Council] have cut back on repairs but haven’t stopped the rise in rental.”

Jan Thomson wrote: “Exactly! The council won’t maintain them. Our street is a nightmare for parking and my car has been bumped and vandalised twice. Apparently according to SLC they are demolishing some of them at the top of my street... parking will be worse! Yet the garages down near Duncanrig are all being done up. Big sign on the main Westwood Road. I called the number on it today to ask what other areas they were sorting –only two areas... it’s a joke!”

Natalie McMahon said: “I live round the corner from these ‘refurbished’ ones. They knocked down one set and put it into parking and have left the others.

“And that took them weeks and weeks to do.”

Carol Imrie posted: “There was also a lock-up set on fire at Alison Lea – backing right onto houses.”
