Tough test for hikers

- Terry McGeary

The reservoir of Loch Sloy and a tough climb of a munro were the targets set by Our Lady of Lourdes Hiking Club recently.

Poor weather on Loch Lomondside made for an outing that severely tested both waterproofs and wearers with constant drizzle as the walkers set off on their 10 and 12-kilometre hikes, respectively.

A high-level group dropped off by the side of Loch Lomond at Inveruglas made its way gently, ascending by Inveruglas Water for the first three kilometres, and taking in part of the Cowal Way.

This easy start was soon forgotten as the map contours began squeezing together and Ben Vane’s 915 metres (3002ft) was achieved over just one or two kilometres.

Unfortunately, the climb was blighted at higher levels not only by unremitting rain but by blustery wind and cloud cover both contributing to a noticeable drop in temperature.

Scrambling at places, walking up tracks that had become burns and occasional slips onto backsides on the descent made for a challenging climb that significantly extended its projected time.

The low-level hikers were equally soaked but were spared the wind chill as they trekked from Ardvorlich – two kilometres north of Inveruglas – and took an easy zigzag land rover track west up the side of Ben Vorlich before heading south to curve around it, picking up the same path as the high levellers by Inveruglas Water.

Soon the group could see the mighty Loch Sloy Dam looming above and marvelled at the 56-metre high, 357-metre long concrete barrier holding back the 34 million cubic metres of water above them.

Released down two-metre diameter steel pipes and tunnels, this water provides over 150MW of renewable electricity at the power station below.

Having had a wet lunch on the dam itself, the group made its way back down, taking a slightly lower route and, like the high levellers, had brighter weather and better views as it headed for Inveruglas to enjoy a change, followed by a welcome hot drink in the cafe while waiting for the others.

A social hour in Balloch’s Tullie Inn rounded off a tough but satisfying day.

The club makes everyone very welcome if they want to give this healthy, social activity a try.

Head along to the next sign-up night which is 7.30pm on Thursday, June 29 in the upstairs lounge of Our Lady of Lourdes RC Church hall in The Murray.
