EK nightclub up for top industry award

- Andrea O’Neill

East Kilbride’s only nightclub is in the running to be crowned Glasgow’s hottest nightspot.

Downtown has been named a finalist for the coveted Best Nightclub accolade in The Glasgow Awards 2017.

With thousands of nominations received, Lanarkshire’s home of GBX anthems beat off stiff competition to be shortlisted alongside top city nightspots The Garage, The Shed, Kushion, Bamboo, Sugar Cube, The Corinthian Club, Sub Club, La Cheetah Club and Viper.

Downtown manager Mark Burns said:“It’s great to be nominated in any of Glasgow’s award categories. We’re definitely a small fish in a big pond.

“We are a community nightclub and work hard all year round so it’s nice to be recognised. I’d like to thank everyone who voted for us.

“We were pipped at the post in 2015 so I’m hopeful this year. I fancy winning this.”

Two East Kilbride businesses are also up for industry awards.

Langlands-based Excel Vending Limited has been nominated for WOW Business of the Year and Jan Stewart Pram & Nursery, at Nerston industrial estate, is up for Independent Retail Business of the Year. The black tie awards ceremony will be held at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Glasgow on Tuesday, June 27.

Irfan Younis, CEO of event organisers Creative Oceanic, said: “We are delighted by the support we have had from the public who have voted for their favourites, to show them the appreciation they deserve.

“We wish all finalists the very best of luck.”
