East Kilbride celebrated the 20th Relay For Life at the John Wright Sports Centre to raise funds for Cancer Research UK.

Around 200 participants were involved in the 24-hour event, setting up camp around the track and taking turns to walk throughout the day and night. The committee hope to raise £45,000 this year and have already reached around £30,000.

Thanks to the lovely sunshine and a fantastic turnout from people in the East Kilbride community, there was a definite gala day feel to Saturday with bouncy castles, team games, a children’s scavenger hunt, dance display and much more.

One of the teams – The Suepremes – were also celebrating their 10th relay and their fancy dress dance-off, based on the Builders versus Strutters in that well-known TV advert, was a highlight of the event and won the team the top prize for fancy dress.

A special award was announced for Liam Donnelly who has been a fantastic supporter of the event for its entire 20 years, hosting the Survivors tent.

This year’s Spirit Of The Relay trophy went to Roddy Shanks from East Kilbride Pipe Band. He has been the event’s lone piper during the Candle of Hope ceremony throughout that time.

Co-chair of this year’s relay Alex Bell said: “I am overwhelmed by the success of this year’s relay and the amazing support of the committee and the teams who took part.

“The people of East Kilbride have been so generous too, coming along and getting involved on the day. We just couldn’t do it without them.”

A final fundraising total will be announced later in the summer.
