JACK IS A REAL HERO

Youngster battles back from heart surgery

- Nicola Findlay

A brave East Kilbride schoolboy has fought back from open heart surgery not once – but twice.

Plucky Jack Tennick, 7, was born with Aortic Valve Stenosis (AVS) – a condition where the aortic valve is smaller or tighter than it should be, putting more pressure on the heart.

Having undergone heart surgery at just eight months old, football-daft Jack recently went under the knife once again as medics discovered the valve repaired during his first op had deteriorated to such an extent that there was no other option. His mum Claire told the News: “He has shown such resilience through everything. You would never know what he has been through.”

A teenage thug who robbed a man at a town centre ATM and threatened to kill him has avoided detention.

Daniel McGeorge, 18, previously pled guilty to assaulting his victim in Cornwall Way in East Kilbride on June 7 last year.

He had grabbed the victim’s clothing, presented a sharp object against his neck, threatened to kill him, demanded he handed over his bank card and robbed him of it.

Hamilton Sheriff Court was told that, during the course of the evening, McGeorge and others he had been drinking with – including the victim – made their way to a cash machine.

The fiscal told the court: “The complainer had put his bank card in the machine when he felt a sharp object at his neck.

“He was clearly concerned and in a state of fear.

“The accused said‘gie me yer bank card’and at that point another member of the group cancelled the transaction, which produced the bank card and the accused took hold of it.

“Another person at that point called to the accused to give the card back and he dropped it.”

When questioned by police following his arrest, McGeorge, originally from Larkhall, said“I didn’t do it – it’s a complete lie.”

On Friday, Sheriff ShionaWaldron sentenced McGeorge, who appeared from custody, to a community payback order.

The teenager was placed under supervision for 15 months and ordered to carry out 180 hours of unpaid work within a period of eight months.
