The Scottish Model Airshow will take to the skies in Strathaven this weekend.

Action will take place over two days from this Saturday at Strathaven Airfield.

The event, organised by the Large Model Association and the Scottish Aeromodellers Association, will showcase an amazing variety of large scale and aerobatic models flown by the best model pilots from across the UK.

Spectators will be able to enjoy aircraft spanning the whole history of aviation from Sopwith biplanes and Richtofen triplanes of World War I to classics of the 1930s like the Tiger Moth and wartime Spitfires and Hurricanes.

They will go straight through to modern fast jets and Red Bull-type specialist aerobatic models.

The four-engined “Memphis Belle” will be demonstrated flying in close formation with its sister Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress.

Specialist traders and catering facilities will be available on site and camping and caravan areas will be provided, together with free parking for spectators adjacent to the airfield.

Entry to the event is £8 for adults and children go free.

Proceeds are donated to Kilbryde Hospice and the St Andrew’s Hospice.

The sky will be full of models of all types throughout both days from 10am until 5pm.

John Hastie Museum Trust This summer’s exhibition looks at transport in Strathaven and Avondale through the ages. It will probably never be known how the Neolithic folk who lived in our area 6000 years ago travelled – though travel they did, as we can tell from their longdistance trading of stone tools! We have to look to the Romans for the first evidence of organised travel, in the shape of their military roads. A major Roman road passes close to modern Strathaven. However, the exhibition will focus particularly on the great railway era (how many people in Strathaven know the town once had three railway stations?) and road transport, public and personal, from Shanks’ Pony, through the advent of motor buses to the Strathaven Biplane! There’s a special excitement among members and friends of our trust this year for included in the opening of the exhibition, there will be the launch of a unique new book, compiled by one of the team: Forgotten Farmsteads of Avondale – and Beyond. The exhibition is in the Granary of the Strathaven Town Mill Arts and Heritage Centre. Entry is free and you can be sure that there’s interest for all the family. Local schools have already signed up to come along. The exhibition runs every day until this Sunday. It is then open during the school summer holiday weekends.

\Chapelton

Community Council The next meeting of Auldhouse and Chapelton Community Council will be on Wednesday, June 28 at 7.30pm in the Chapelton Community Hall. It would normally be held in Auldhouse but due to the school being closed for the summer holidays, the meeting will take place in Chapelton.
