Priorities for the new council administration

Readers have their say on key issues

- Mark Pirie

It has been a busy few weeks at South Lanarkshire Council – and new leader John Ross has shared his views on a range of issues in the News.

We took to the streets to see what changes and improvements the electorate think should be priorities for the new administration.

Shopper Roselynne Sweeney would like to see better investment in business across South Lanarkshire.

“When you look at some of the main streets in South Lanarkshire like Hamilton they are completely empty,” she said.

“There should be lower rents and an effort put in to bringing businesses back.”

Margaret McCready hopes that improvements would be made to pavements.

“The pavements near homes and parks are full of holes,” she said.

“The paths are a complete mess. Something has got to be done about it.”

Rose Shipsey from the Village wanted to see better transport infrastructure implemented.

“There are areas of the town that only get one bus every hour,” she said. “Then they get absolutely nothing at night. Someone needs to take a look at it.”

Jessica Main wants to see the SNP continue the work of Labour in council housing.

“I have a council house and it’s affordable for me,” she said. “It’s something I couldn’t do without so I don’t want any big changes to it.”
