Are school summer holidays too long?

Is it time to cut back on long break?

- Andrea O’Neill

With the schools out for summer break, parents have a huge task on their hands trying to keep their kids amused for the next seven weeks.

We asked East Kilbride shoppers if they think school holidays are too long and if it is time for a rethink, with a shorter summer break and longer winter one.

Jackton dad Ritchie Gilchrist, 51, thinks seven weeks is just the right amount of time as he prepares to head off on a family holiday to France. He said: “I love having the kids off school and spending lots of time with them. The weather is slightly better too so it makes more sense the kids are off for longer. It’s just the right amount of time for them.”

Ritchie’s 18-year-old daughter Hannah added: “In winter there is not a lot to do so I look forward to having a long time off in the summer. I have horses so I do a lot of horse riding and go water-skiing in Loch Lomond.”

Lindsayfield mum Tara Hogan, 38, thinks everyone needs the break. She said: “My son is only 5 so school can be a lot for kids his age. They need the time off. I don’t think seven weeks is too long and the teachers need a break too.”

However, 85-year-old Anne McArthur thought it was time for a change. She said: “I think the school holidays are far too long.

“They should get more time at Christmas. I found it hard to entertain my kids when they were young.”
