EK girls shine at football festival
Girls football teams from East Kilbride and Strathaven had a ball at an annual festival.
Hundreds took part from across South Lanarkshire at the Hamilton Palace Sports Grounds.
Youngsters from East Kilbride primary schools Mossneuk, St Vincent’s, Castlefield and Auldhouse showed off their skills at the tournament.
Strathaven schools Wester Overton and Kirklandpark also took to the field.
The festival is targeted at P5 to P7 girls who play a series of five-a-side games during the competition with each player gaining a medal at the end.
David Watson, East Kilbride West councillor and chair of South Lanarkshire Leisure and Culture, praised all involved in the event.
He said:“This year was our sixth annual Girls’Football Festival and without doubt the biggest and best yet with more than 40 teams involved.
“Other than displaying some fine footwork on the pitch, the schools clearly had a lot of fun, which is pretty much what it’s all about.
“Praise must also go to our fantastic active school volunteers who gave up their time to coordinate pitches, referee matches and ensure all pupils got the most out of the experience.”
Secondary school teams also got in on the action in the afternoon to contest‘The Summer Cup’.
This year saw St Andrew’s and St Bride’s beat former champions and fellow East Kilbride team Duncanrig Secondary 2-0 in their five-a-side contest.
