Organ donation to change to “opt-out”
Is proposed new system a positive?
Scottish ministers want to introduce a new system of organ donations based on presumed consent in an effort to increase life-saving organ transplants.
Campaigners have long called for a “soft optout” system, where patients are assumed to agree to donate useful organs unless they or their families strongly object.
The change of policy follows the introduction in Wales of a presumed consent system in December 2015.
The News asked shoppers in East Kilbride whether they agreed with an “opt-out” system.
Kirsty Thomson said: “I am already on the organ donation register but I think the new system is a good thing.
“If you have a really strong objection you are more likely to opt out than people are to sign up.”
Anthony McGrath, from Calderwood, agrees with the new system being proposed.
“I definitely agree with the opt-out system,” he confirmed. “Organ donation is a good thing, especially for children who are waiting on transplants.”
Shopper Theresa Dunn said: “I think it is good they are changing it as it means there will be more organs available.”
And visitor Simmone Pringle, who was out for the day with daughter, Indie, said: “I think this is a really good idea.
“More people should already be signed up.”
