- Court reporter

A supermarket worker caught with a sickening stash of porn involving humans having sex with dolphins, snakes, horses, pigs and dogs has been spared jail.

John Inglis, 31, had been downloading extreme pornography and storing it on a Samsung mobile phone, USB memory stick and a hard drive.

Police were alerted to someone using his internet IP address to access vile images of children and his home in Glen Feshie, St Leonards was raided.

Inglis was hauled away from work back to his house where police were removing computer equipment and he confirmed it was his and that only he had access to it.

But once officers conducted a thorough check of the computer equipment and mobile phone, they found graphic images showing humans engaging in sexual activity with a variety of creatures.

They also uncovered shocking images of child sex abuse among the 3500 he had stashed on his devices.

Inglis appeared at Hamilton Sheriff Court and admitted one charge of possessing child pornography and another of possessing images depicting sexual activity between humans and animals.

He has been ordered to carry out 250 hours of unpaid work by Sheriff Vincent Smith who also placed him on the sex offenders’ register for 28 months.

The offending took place between January 2007 and July 2016.

Depute fiscal Michael Macintosh said: “Information was received that the accused or someone using his IP address may be in possession of inappropriate images of children.

“A warrant was sought, granted and executed at his home address.

“They found a SanDisk USB memory stick and a Maxtor harddrive.

“The accused was not present but shortly thereafter he was traced to his place of work.

“They took hold of his Samsung mobile phone and told him what was going on and he was asked a serious of questions about what had been found.”

Mr Macintosh added: “A memory stick was found to contain an extremely large amount of extreme pornography not involving children but animals.

“3500 images were found with 2000 still accessible to the user.

“The images were a mixture of moving and still and depicted males and females engaging in sexual activity with a variety of animals including dogs, horses, dolphins, snakes and pigs.

“A search history showed the accused had been searching for terms associated with this kind of material.”

Jackson Bateman, defending, said: “I submit that there is a direct alternative and a way of dealing with this man without sending him to custody.

“He is a man who has made efforts to gain and hold down employment and that is a factor in his favour.

“This is a man who could be managed effectively in the community and there is no suggestion of any imminent harm.

“Clearly support is required and he accepts his behaviour was unacceptable and he has issues he needs to address.”

Sheriff Vincent Smith said: “I’m required to take into account the fact that you have never offended in the past but there is no doubt that this is a serious matter.”
