Royal day out at garden party

East Kilbride trio enjoy special occasion

- Nicola Findlay

A community stalwart and two East Kilbride teachers had a royal invite to a very special party.

Avril Anderson from St Leonards, Calderglen High School head teacher Liz White and her depute Odette Frazer attended the Queen’s Garden Party at Holyroodhouse.

Despite the rain early in the day, it didn’t dampen the trio’s spirits.

Avril works alongside Liz and Odette to run the Befrienders’ scheme at Calderglen which sees pupils visiting older residents in the local community.

Avril told the News: “It was a fabulous day and we all thoroughly enjoyed it.

“I believe I was nominated by the Lord Lieutenant and I asked for Liz and Odette to come too as they are central to the Befrienders’ project.

“The weather wasn’t great at the beginning of the day but it brightened up for the Queen’s arrival – although we didn’t quite manage to get close enough for a chat!”

Avril added: “It was a surprise but I was over the moon when I found out I was going as I have never been before.

“Councillor Gladys Miller was also there and I did manage to speak to First Minister Nicola Sturgeon.

“It was a huge honour not only for me but for everyone who has been involved in the Befrienders’ project for the last seven years.

“I couldn’t do what I do without the support of all the pupils and staff and I would like to thank them for all their hard work.”
