Head proud of school’s efforts
Duncanrig under committee’s spotlight
The head teacher at Duncanrig Secondary told a meeting of the East Kilbride area committee he is proud of his school following a recent inspection.
George Wynne addressed councillors after a report by inspectors from Education Scotland.
In January, inspectors analysed questionnaires issued to a sample of parents, pupils and staff, observed teaching and met members of the wider school community.
Mr Wynne told the committee: “I am delighted they highlighted so many areas of good practise.
“It gives me confidence to come back to the council and say: ‘I don’t just think we are doing a good job – we are doing a good job’.”
He went on: “I am particularly proud the ethos of the school was praised.
“As I am sure you are all well aware, the pace of change in Scottish education at the minute is very quick and we are staying ahead of the curve.”
He also praised the hard work and dedication of all his staff – with two of the senior management team staying on for two months beyond their retirement to make sure the inspection went smoothly.
Mr Wynne did say, however, he felt the gradings of ‘good’ across the board were not a true reflection of the positive comments and report by inspectors – but said this was due to new, more stringent methods of assessment by Education Scotland.
The school was marked good in the areas of leadership of change, learning, teaching and assessment, raising attainment and achievement and ensuring wellbeing, equality and inclusion.
Inspectors said key strengths at the school are the drive and commitment of the head teacher in striving for improvement; his encouragement of team-work and collegiality amongst staff; the positive relationships between young people and staff which is creating a climate where young people feel well supported by teachers to succeed in their learning and the extensive range of out-of-class activities which are helping young people to develop their skills and interests and achieve success.
The engagement of young people in supporting the life and work of the school was also praised.
Inspectors say they demonstrate a caring attitude through their contribution to the wellbeing of others within school, local and global communities.
Areas for improvement, however, include strategic direction to be further developed to ensure all key priorities lead to school improvement and to continue to improve attainment across all stages.
