Top award for Sanderson High
Prize handed out at glittering ceremony
Sanderson High School picked up a prestigious award at a glittering ceremony in Glasgow.
They won the 2017 Employability Across Learning Scottish Education Award (Secondary) – sponsored by the SQA.
It is in recognition of the school’s hard work in providing equity for pupils with additional support needs in order to provide them with a positive post-school destination and prepare them for learning, life and work.
School representatives collected a trophy and a cheque at the Scottish Education Awards at the Hilton Hotel.
Head teacher Aisling Boyle said: “A whole-school approach means learners at Sanderson High School are offered a wide variety of career related and work-based learning opportunities that aim to inspire the exploration of future pathways.
“The learning experiences within and beyond the curriculum not only provide pupils with a significantly enhanced skills portfolio but also ensure meaningful connections with the world of work and accreditation in the senior phase.
“As part of this approach the school created the subject ‘Education for Work’ which now forms part of the core curriculum at all levels.
“The school has also developed a position statement which states that all young people will learn about the world of work, participate in work experience where possible and have a clearly defined pathway from S1 to S6.”
She added: “The school has a good range of work placements for young people in the senior phase which provides them with an excellent experience of the world of work and which links well to the curriculum.
“There is also a close partnership with Calderglen High School with their pupils taking up volunteering opportunities at Sanderson High.”
Meanwhile, Sanderson High is also celebrating after being awarded the Level 1 Rights Respecting Award.
As a school, they have been working towards this award for several years.
A dedicated group of pupils have been organising events to raise awareness of the rights of the child and ensuring that everyone uses rights-based language and follows the school’s Rights Respecting Charter.
Ms Boyle added: “Sanderson High is very proud of this award and will continue to make sure all pupils know their rights and entitlements.”
