On Road to the top

-

An aspiring Westwood actress performed in a starring role at the Scottish Youth Theatre in Glasgow.

Rachel Wright, 19, trodd the boards in her college production of the Jim Cartwright play‘Road’.

The dark comedy explores the lives of people in a deprived area of Lancashire during the government of Margaret Thatcher.

Former Duncanrig Secondary pupil Rachel, who studies acting at City of Glasgow College, said:“I played Dor, who is a tarty, drunk woman, so it was a very interesting character to play.

“I had to be really out there and over-exaggerated with my mannerisms.

“I had to portray a Lancaster accent which was very tricky. I tried to pick up the intricacies of the accent from watching TV and I felt as if I was able to pull it off.

“I get such a buzz from performing in front of a live audience. There is always that mixture of anxiety and adrenalin because people are watching you but it is very enjoyable to do.

“Going forward I want to take a break from education and concentrate on taking part in auditions.

“I came straight from school to do the HNC course and now I want to face the real world and see what it brings.”

The show’s director Stephen Cafferty said:“Rachel and her fellow students worked really hard in rehearsals and were dedicated to making their production a real success.”
