New Dons deal for Docherty

- Paul Thomson

Aberdeen assistant manager Tony Docherty has agreed a contract extension at Pittodrie this week.

Docherty, who grew up in Greenhills, and Aberdeen gaffer Derek McInnes have both agreed new deals with the club that will see them remain in the Granite City until at least the summer of 2020.

The 46-year-old has been No 2 to McInnes for a decade now following partnerships at St Johnstone and Bristol City before moving to the Dons in 2013.

Together they have won a League Cup and guided Aberdeen to second place in the Scottish Premiership for the past three seasons.

Just last month, the duo rejected a deal to move south to English side Sunderland and they have been rewarded for their loyalty.

Commenting on the news, Dons chairman Stewart Milne said. “I mentioned recently that Derek and Tony had demonstrated their loyalty to and ambitions for the club when they elected to remain and this contract extension reaffirms that.

“This is great news for everyone connected to Aberdeen and gives us a real boost ahead of the season.

“I would again urge the supporters, as they always do, to get right behind Derek, Tony and the team and really make a difference for what promises to be another exciting, and hopefully ultimately, successful season.

“Continuity will be crucial in the weeks to come as we look to enjoy another successful campaign.”
