Boys’Brigade company celebrates 50years

- Nicola Findlay

The 7th EK Boys’ Brigade Company want more youngsters to get involved and are holding an open evening this Friday.

It comes at an important time as the company celebrates its golden anniversary.

To mark 50 years of playing an important role in the community, there will be a special weekend away for all sections.

From its initial formation in November 1968, in the former Allers Primary School, the 7th EK BB Company had nowhere to call their own until it moved into its present home at Claremont Parish Church in St Leonards where boys from primary one to S6 take part in many activities with other companies from East Kilbride and beyond.

Activities are led by an enthusiastic band of leaders, some with many years’ experience, and others who have come through the company and want to give something back to new generations.

There is also the opportunity to gain awards through the BB’s own award scheme, leading to the Queen’s Badge, an award widely recognised by employers and other institutions.

It aims to develop all aspects of the boys and young men in its care; giving them more responsibility as they become older to develop their independence and leadership skills.

There is an open evening at Claremont Church on High Common Road is from 7pm to 9pm and parents and boys can go along and see what the BBs have to offer and ask questions.

There will be tea, coffee, juice and burgers available throughout the evening at no cost.
