Weather proves to be the winner

Duncanrig ramblers get soaked in Arrochar

- James McGowan

Duncanrig Ramblers headed to Arrochar for two walks – but due to weather everyone got soaked.

The high walk group had at least a few dry moments.

They started at Ardvorlich House and for a short distance walked parallel to the A82 before passing through a small tunnel under the railway.

From here they began the ascent up the south-east flank of Ben Vorlich following a well graded trail with several switchbacks leading to a telecoms mast.

The group still had some fine views of Loch Lomond with views over to Inversnaid House and beyond.

Ramblers followed the access road to Loch Sloy before crossing the Inveruglus water via a bridge and joining the Cowal Way signposted all the way to Arrochar.

This path initially goes through woods, climbs up to follow a pylon route then headed south on a single file trail – with several ups and downs and views of Loch Long – before the group joined a larger path dropping down towards Succoth and the waiting coach.

The alternate walk started at Rest-and-be-Thankful but the rain started as soon as they left the coach.

However, the hardy lot carried on and following a higher route through the Glen Croe Forest, still had views of The Cobbler and down into Glen Croe where they could see the old Wade military road which was often used from the 1940s to the 1960s for motor hill races.

The group stopped for lunch at the Ardgartan Forest car park and had some shelter in the overhangs of the roof of the closed visitor centre – afterwards they crossed the A83 and climbed up into the forest following the path with Loch Long on the right and The Cobbler on their left before descending down to Succoth and the coach.

Both groups then enjoyed a social in Arrochar
