Stunning views for club on Arran

Duncanrig members rewarded on walks

- James McGowan

Duncanrig Ramblers headed to the Isle of Arran for two walks recently.

The high walkers stepped off the ferry and straight onto a service bus for the short journey to Corrie for the start of the climb up Goatfell.

After the initial walk in, the group met stony mountain footpaths, crossed some very steep terrain but found the path is well constructed until high in the Corrie where stone steps have been cut into the rock to make the ascent safer.

The path left Corrie and the group reached the ridge at the bealach between North Goatfell and Mullach Buidhe.

They then had a steeper climb but had great views and saw some fine waterslides visible in the cascading Corrie burn to their left.

The route then improved but the ramblers had to carefully negotiate their way to the summit and the wonderful viewpoint with great granite ridges of the other Arran peaks looking very dramatic.

The view extended across the Clyde estuary.

The descent down the east ridge was a bit rocky at first but then on a good but steep path. On the shoulder of Meall Breac, the walkers met the main ‘tourist’ path right down towards Brodick Bay and, eventually, the pub.

The alternative walk was lovely, varied with some fabulous views. From the pier, the group walked along Brodick esplanade, turning left when they reached the post office which continued along quiet side roads which pass the chalets of the upmarket Auchrannie resort.

The group then followed a path alongside Glen Cloy Water before crossing a wooden footbridge and following a forest path through birch and mixed forests until they reached a clearing at the A841.

After crossing the road the group continued to follow the forest path before joining a single track path rising up through the Clauchland Hills reaching a small cairn.

They were rewarded with stunning views of the Holy Isle, Brodick Bay and beyond. From the cairn, the group headed downhill towards South Corriegills then following the path passing North Corriegills and joining the Arran Coastal Path for the walk back into Brodick, some refreshments and then the ferry home.
