MSP blasts decision delay

- Mark Pirie

Post Office bosses have been branded “ridiculous” as staff at an East Kilbride branch still wait to find out their fate.

A year ago the News revealed controversial plans to franchise the town centre post office had been resurrected.

Just 18 months after management had reversed their decision to franchise the branch, it was confirmed they had once again launched a search to find a private partner.

Staff at the Cornwall Street Post Office were informed of the decision.

However, 12 months on they are no closer to finding out their future.

The last battle to stop East Kilbride’s main post office becoming a franchise rumbled on for over two years and won public support.

East Kilbride MSP Linda Fabiani has called for staff to finally be informed of the future plans for the branch.

The SNP MSP said. “The fact that both staff and customers are left none the wiser a year on from the announcement of plans to franchise is ridiculous.

“This is a process the branch knows too well and it is about time a decision is made once and for all.

“It is imperative the decision-makers keep everyone fully up to date – staff should not be kept in the dark and they deserve to know what the plans are.”

A Post Office spokesman said any decision affecting the main East Kilbride branch would be taken to a public consultation before plans go forward.

He said: “It can understandably take some time for us to finalise plans for any changes to one of our directly-managed branches.

“As soon as we have any news on our East Kilbride branch, we will first update our staff and then begin a public consultation so that our customers will have the opportunity to feed back on our proposed plans for the branch.”
