Cammy’s support for soldiers with PTSD
EK hero in charity bid
East Kilbride war hero Cammy MacLeod has vowed to support former soldiers with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) with the launch of his new charity.
Ex-army infantry sergeant Cammy has teamed up with pal Colin MacLachlan to launch ‘Who Dares Cares’ – a charity designed to reach out and help those suffering with PTSD.
After PTSD affected him personally and several friends, Cammy “realised he could be doing a bit more”.
The Westwood man chatted with former SAS hero Colin – star of ITV show SAS: Who Dares Wins – and decided to launch a charity.
Last year Cammy led a push-up challenge to raise money for Who Dares Cares, with over 500 people taking part, and they were granted official charity status in March.
Cammy admits he has suffered from PTSD and after stepping back from his job at Alba Military Fitness due to various injuries “catching up with him”, said he felt like he was at the bottom again.
He believes the experience of having “been there, seen it, done it” has helped him communicate with his fellow ex-servicemen.
“I don’t want to do a disservice to anyone but when I left the army I found that the support network just wasn’t there,” he said. “We want to remember the fallen, support the living.”
There are plans in the works for several fundraising events and gettogether days.
The ‘Buddy Buddy’ project aims to start conversations between former soldiers, and there will be ‘Walk, Talk and Brew’ days where former soldiers meet at Strathclyde Park for a tea or a coffee.
Cammy also plan on holding their first weekend break.
