NHS staff attacked in the line of duty...

News readers are shocked by statistics

- Andrea O’Neill

Our special report in last week’s News exposed the danger our NHS staff face while in the line of duty.

Through the Freedom of Information Act we revealed NHS Lanarkshire recorded a staggering 605 i ncidents of vi olence against doctors, nurses, emergency workers and hospital staff at Hairmyres in the last three years.

The shocking statistic led the town’s MP Dr Lisa Cameron to call for ‘zero tolerance’.

This week we garnered reaction from East Kilbride shoppers.

Lily Muir, 75, said: “I’m lost for words, this is disgusting. It’s a very high number, just awful. Everywhere is polluted with drugs and alcohol now. There should be better security in hospitals to stop these attacks.”

Former NHS worker James Maxwell, 78, from Westwood said: “It’s really quite shocking. I didn’t realise assaults on doctors and nurses happened up here. It ’s concerning when it happens locally. Hospitals should have metal detectors to check for weapons.”

Greenhills man Campbell Kelly, 85, added: “This shouldn’t be happening. There is far too much violence these days. These figures are totally unbelievable.”

Margaret Robertson, 84, of The Murray was shocked by the report and said: “This is actually quite scary. My daughter works in Hairmyres.

“Our NHS staff should be protected while doing such a good job. I’m absolutely shocked.”
