Double act fail to shine
Snatched (12)
Goldie Hawn’s first movie role in 15 years deserved so much better than this mediocre actioncomedy.
You’d think pairing the veteran up with comedienne Amy Schumer would be a recipe for brilliance. Sadly laughs are at a premium as pratfalls, bizarre scenarios and wonky dialogue take centre stage.
Sleepless (15)
Jamie Foxx sleepwalks his way through Swiss helmer Baran bo Odar’s first mainstream flick.
He only comes to life when the bullets and fists start flying, but the central storyline fails to get pulses racing.
Cop movie clichés abound, although bo Odar proves to be adept at making us wince and delivering danger.
Colossal (15)
Anne Hathaway controlling a giant monster rampaging through Seoul with her mind.
As concepts go, Colossal’s is far from run-of-the-mill and director Nacho Vigalondo’s bonkers indie makes for fun-but-flawed viewing.
Hathaway does a fine job playing an unravelling heroine who comes to the realisation that there’s more to life than booze. Jason Sudeikis is as charming as ever, but Vigalondo gifts him with a layered character who takes some dark turns.
The up and down tone won’t be for everyone and the bleak final act sucks the life out of proceedings. Originality in Hollywood has to be embraced, though, and Vigalondo and his cast take us on an off-the-wall journey.
