Has Labour leader done enough to win your vote?

Shoppers give their views on Jeremy Corbyn

- Nicola Findlay

Labour held its autumn conference in Brighton last week with leader Jeremy Corbyn declaring the party as the‘new mainstream’ in his keynote speech.

Despite turbulent times for Labour in recent years, and a slump in support in traditional strongholds – including parts of Lanarkshire – Mr Corbyn was given a hero’s welcome by party members.

He also made it clear he saw Labour as a “government in waiting”.

The News took to East Kilbride town centre to find out whether folk here would be more or less inclined to vote Labour following Mr Corbyn’s rousing speech.

Noel Wallace from West Mains said: “I honestly don’t think they have become any more credible as a party and I certainly wouldn’t vote for them.”

He added: “I think they still have a lot of ground to make up.”

And shopper Tony Brown went on: “For me, nothing has changed in the last few months and I wouldn’t vote for them.”

Meanwhile, East Kilbride worker Stephen Kirkwood said: “To be honest, I really have no interest in politics and no matter what any party leader says, I don’t see that changing.”

However, Leah Sinclair, said: “I think I would be more inclined to support them now and vote for them – I think Corbyn has done well connecting with young people.”
