BIG CLEAN-UP
Volunteers brave rain at Calderglen
Bits of a discarded shopping trolley and light fittings were discovered as rain poured from grey skies above.
The weather certainly wasn’t kind to volunteers at Sunday’s Calderglen Country Park clean-up.
However, the big-hearted dozen felt a warm glow after tackling known ‘grot spots’ in the area and putting their environment first.
A total of 12 bags of rubbish and 13 bags of recycling were collected from the park as well as the green spaces and streams around Staffa, Inch Marnock and Skye.
The clean-up was held in conjunction with Keep Scotland Beautiful’s Clean Up Scotland campaign.
Green campaigners Kirsten Robb and Iain Hughes organised the Calderglen event.
And Kirsten told the News: “Everyone enjoyed meeting new people and working together to make a real difference to the local environment we love.
“It left us with a great deal of satisfaction – but it was also great fun! I’d recommend it to anyone.
“What we want to see now is that these areas stay in the condition in which they were left.
“We want the small minority who litter and allow their dogs to foul to take their rubbish home, and also for people to keep our rivers clean by not flushing wipes, nappies and other items down the toilet but ‘bagging and binning’ instead.”
Iain thanked Calderglen’s countryside rangers, South Lanarkshire Council and Tesco St Leonards for their support in providing materials, bag collections and refreshments for the event.
He added: “We’ve still got more grot spots to tackle.
“If people would like to join forces and team up to make a difference to their local environment, just email us on robbkirsten@yahoo.co.uk for more details, like the Calderglen Heritage page on Facebook or keep an eye on the News for our next cleanup event.”
