Mamta thrilled to be part of Games

Special Olympics experience

- Nicola Findlay

An award-winning engineer added another string to her bow when she supported some of the town’s Special Olympians.

Mamta Singhal, who is originally from Stewartfield, was a volunteer at the Special Olympics in Sheffield, South Yorkshire.

The successful entrepreneur, who has previously worked for a leading games and toys manufacturer as well as running her own successful consultancy business, joined others from Coca-Cola, where she is now employed.

Coca-Cola European Partners (CCEP) was the sponsor of the National Games’ volunteering programme and volunteers from across CCEP and The Coca-Cola Company (TCCC) offered their support throughout the week.

This included staff from the drink giant’s East Kilbride plant.

Mamta, 35, has played a key role in increasing the profile of women in engineering and won numerous accolades.

She rubbed shoulders with ministers in the House of Commons and attended a Women in Enterprise debate at the Houses of Parliament.

However, the commercialisation manager told the News her latest role proved equally rewarding.

The former Claremont High School pupil, who is now based in the company’s head office in London, said: “I was a sports-specific volunteer focusing on table tennis.

“I was one of 55 volunteers from my branch of the company to be picked to go to Sheffield and it was a great honour and I thoroughly enjoyed the experience.

“There were people from all over at the event but it was great to meet up with my colleagues from my home town who were also volunteers at the Games as well as the athletes from East Kilbride taking part.”

Mamta was involved throughout the games including helping to prepare the medals for presentation, making sure athletes were at the correct places at the correct time, score-keeping, handing out bottles of water and keeping athletes relaxed.

She was also thrilled to be at the opening ceremony.

“My family did and still do a lot of charity work in East Kilbride and when I worked with Matel I helped with the Children’s Special Olympics,” Mamta added.

“So I jumped at the chance to be involved in this year’s adult Special Olympics through Coca -Cola.

“I always want to help the community whenever I can and seeing the competitors energy and the joy on their faces when they picked up medals, or equally just for taking part, made giving up some of my own free time well worth it.”
