New season for East Kilbride Probus Club

- Terry McGeary Ken Lawton

Hikers from East Kilbride chose the Ardgartan area for their recent outing.

A group of members from Our Lady of Lourdes Hiking Club was dropped off in Glen Coe at the Rest-and-be-Thankful viewpoint on the A83.

Due to the unusually large number of hikers keen to take on a high-level walk, a lastminute decision was taken to have two groups of 15 walking from the Rest up to the summit of the Corbett Ben Donich (847 metres) while a smaller group took a lower altitude forest track passing along the west side of Glen Croe, above Croe Water down towards Loch Long and continuing through Ardgartan Forest back to Arrochar.

Weather conditions for both groups, while much better than had been predicted with little rain and ideal for walking, were still suitable for a bit of unwanted midge activity at lower levels amongst the trees.

Approaching the summit of Ben Donich with its scattered massive boulders presented It’s fair to say the dark days of winter are approaching so to help ease things through, East Kilbride Probus Club restarts its programme today.

Probus is an association of retired and semi-retired professional and businessmen that offers friendship, fellowship and fun.

The club embraces any person who has had a measure of responsibility in any field of endeavour.

This last year, which was the start of the club’s 25th anniversary, saw an excess of funds.

It was decided to donate the money to local charities such as Loaves and Fishes, Kilbryde Hospice, East Kilbride Dementia Carers Group, East Kilbride Talking Newspapers and the Lanarkshire Cancer Care Trust.

Each organisation received £150.

The club meets every first and third Wednesday of the month in the new hall of the Old Parish Church at 2.30pm.

However, owing to refurbishing, the first meeting will be in the old hall adjacent to the church.

Parking can be found behind the church via Lindsay House and all new members are welcome.

Each meeting sees a speaker talking on an interesting topic.

The opening meeting is entitled ‘Secret Communications.’ Intriguing? Well, why not come along for a week or two to see if you like it, before joining.

The following weeks will have such subjects as “The Art of Forgery”; “Rudolph Hess’s landing and what you don’t know”, and “The Romans in Scotland.”

In addition to these talks, the club has social events such as the members’ Christmas Lunch and the Ladies’ Day Valentine Lunch.

There are also visits to such places as Hunterston B Power Station and Glasgow’s Gurdwara Sikh Temple, not forgetting the chance to entertain the ladies with a visit to Drumlanrig Castle, Dumfriesshire, next April.

To find out more, contact secretary John Mitchell on (01355) 231952.

The second meeting will be on Wednesday, October 18 with a topic on the memories of “Women in Munitions.”
