Catch of the day

Shiels triumphant at Upper Avondale club outing

-

Upper Avon Angling Club capitalised on a rise in Brown Trout at Glengavel Reservoir in their members’ competition recently.

This season the catch returns have been well down on previous years and there has been lots of speculation to why that is.

Due to work going on at the reservoir wall, the water levels have been kept much lower than normal.

However, in the run-up to the competition the levels were raised back to normal and that helped to produce some great catches at UAAC’s annual event.

The 16 anglers who took part this year enjoyed a great day out. Weather conditions were ideal with light winds and reasonable cloud cover.

Plenty of fish were caught, ranging from those in the ‘three to the pound’ range, right up to some excellent 2-3lb specimens. A total of 11 fish were weighed-in.

Reservoir regular Alan Shiels experimented with his choice of flies and was rewarded with the prize for the heaviest bag with three fish at a total weight of 6lbs.

The second prize was won by Wullie ‘the trout whisperer’ Weir with two fish at a combined weight of 4lb 7 ounces.

Allan Powis ran a close third with two fish at 4lb 2 ozs, while river member Davy Thomson was one of the few to miss out on a fish – despite using both of the flies in his tin.

The club wished to thank RJ McLeod Civil Engineering for sponsoring the competition, and to Ed McCluskie, who donated a fine bottle of malt whisky to the prize fund.

The UAAA are very much a community club and are focused on providing affordable fishing for locals as well as visitors to the area.

They have permits available for the Upper part of the Avon and Glengavel Reservoir.

If you want to know more visit www.upperavonangling.co.uk or visit their Facebook Page “Upper Avon Angling Association - Strathaven”.

Permits are available at many outlets in Strathaven.

Day tickets are available for Glengavel Reservoir at only £15 a day or Season Tickets for the River at only £15 a season.
