Town’s backing for cops on the streets

Support after News looks into the beat

- Mark Pirie

East Kilbride residents have responded positively to the return of local bobbies on the beat across the town and Avondale.

A review of community policing came into force earlier this year – and 14 new officers have been assigned to cover East Kilbride’s council wards, the town centre and Avondale and Stonehouse alongside an area commander and community inspector.

In a special report by the News last week, local officers said their new community roles are helping Police Scotland gain more intelligence to crack down on crime.

David Edwards from West Mains fully backed the introduction of local officers.

“It’s good to have a familiar face you can recognise,” he said, then added: “I haven’t seen more police on the street recently.”

East Kilbride shopper Joe Queen added: “I back it 100 per cent. You’re always wanting to see more police on the street.”

Jim Williams from the Village said: “I know that they have tried to do this in other areas.

“You want to be able to see a presence in your part of the town – which hasn’t always happened.”

Paul McConnochie added: “I can totally get behind that idea.

“The more police on the street the safer East Kilbride will be and you want to be able to trust your local officer.”
