CND speaker

A long-established fancy dress shop has announced it is closing its doors after more than 20 years in the town.

Fun & Games in The Murray Square will dress up local guisers for the last time this Halloween – but will continue to trade its balloon business in a smaller unit.

The popular store has provided a wide range of party costumes for adults and children over the years and has been a favourite for many drama and stage schools in East Kilbride and beyond.

Originally run by the Egan Family from the mid-1990s, it was taken over by Fun & Games in 2011.

Sales at the shop have suffered from the increase in online stores and with supermarkets now selling licenced costumes, the fancy dress market is no longer viable all year round.

Scott Martin, of Fun & Games Scotland Ltd, said: “It is with sadness that we have decided to stop selling fancy dress at the end of this year.

“We have decided to relocate the balloon business to a smaller unit directly above the old shop where we will continue to provide the best balloon displays and party accessories.

“The new shop will open in early January and we hope to see all our existing customers and many new ones.

“We may even have an opening party...watch this space.” The Radical Independence Campaign East Kilbride will be hosting a public meeting with special guest speaker Janet Fenton, vice-chair of Scottish CND, on Wednesday, October 18, in Calderwood Community Hall, Blackbraes Road, from 7pm to 9 pm.

She is committed to the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons. The event is free.
