MSP seeks assurances over care of elderly
A Central Scotland MSP is calling for assurances over the quality of care of elderly patients at Hairmyres Hospital following the closure of a ward.
NHS Lanarkshire confirmed last week that ward 18 – a continuing care of the elderly ward – was not currently in use and that eight patients had been transferred to ward 15.
Concerned families had previously contacted the News after the ward was closed to new admissions.
Labour’s Monica Lennon raised the issue of the closure of the ward at Holyrood this week, questioning the minister for mental health Maureen Watt.
Ms Lennon asked: “Can she clarify whether this has resulted in a reduction in the number of available beds for elderly patients at Hairmyres and whether the measure is permanent?”
The minister said she was unaware of the closure but would investigate the issue.
Ms Lennon has also written to NHS Lanarkshire who say the closure is part of a “national policy direction” and that it is beneficial for patients and staff to be in one ward rather than split between two.
But Ms Lennon told the News: “Now that it is confirmed that the patients who were being looked after in ward 18 have been moved and the ward is not in use, I am seeking further reassurances from NHS Lanarkshire about what this means for the current staffing levels and bed space for elderly patients at Hairmyres.
“I have also sought clarification on whether this decision is a permanent one.
“The most important matter in this situation is ensuring that patients are continuing to receive the highest standard of care possible.”
NHS Lanarkshire stated last week: “The patients who were moved from ward 18 continue to receive the highest standard of care.”
