Club walking in an alpine wonderland

Duncanrig’s Austrian adventure gets thumbs up

- Linda Mullen

A wonderful walking week to remember.

That was the verdict of Duncanrig Ramblers following their walking holiday in the Austrian Alps.

Forty-nine members and friends headed to the beautiful resort of Mayrhofen, situated in the Zillertal Valley in the western Austrian province of Tyrol.

It is a perfect destination for walkers with its well-signposted network of trails in alpine valleys and on high slopes.

The programme for the week included train rides, bus trips and cable-car rides, revealing hidden valleys and stunning scenery.

The walks were mostly of eight to 10 miles at an altitude of up to 2700 metres which is about 9,000ft.

No matter how remote the valley, a very welcome ‘hutte’ could be found serving hot food and beverages.

This was always a very welcome stop during hikes.

Taking all this into account, members agreed that this must be up there with the best walking anywhere in the world.

The group’s hotel in the centre of Mayrhofen, Hotel Strass-Sport, was of typical Tyrolean construction with its pretty balconies and flowers.

It proved to be a very comfortable base with its excellent food and spa facilities.

The town itself was very lively both during the day and also had evening entertainment for those who still had plenty of energy to expend.
