POLICE PROBE

- Andrea O’Neill

Police want to trace two men following the sexual assault of a young woman in an East Kilbride underpass.

The 22-year-old was left traumatised after being attacked in the early hours of Saturday, October 14, while walking alone in Whitehills Terrace, near to St Louise Primary School.

Following extensive enquiries, police have now issued a description of two men they believe could have “important information” about the incident.

Detectives have identified that a number of people were in The Murray area around the time of the attack after carrying out door-todoor enquiries and studying CCTV footage.

And they want to speak to two men seen in the area.

The first male is described as white, in his early 20s, around 6ft tall with a skinny build and was wearing a lightgrey hooded tracksuit top and grey slimfit tracksuit bottoms.

The second male was white, also in his early 20s, with light ‘fluffy’ stubble, around 5ft 10in tall, wearing a black adidas hooded top with a large white adidas logo on the chest and three white stripes on the sleeves.

He was also wearing light blue skinny jeans and black Vans trainers which had a white sole.

Witnesses who may have been in the area between 3am and 5.30am on the day of the attack are being urged to contact police.

Detective Inspector Stevie McMillan of Police Scotland said: “A significant number of enquiries have been carried out in order to identify who is responsible for this attack which has left this young woman distraught.

“We now know that there were a number of people seen in the area who we are keen to trace. We understand that there were two men in the area at the time who were in each other’s company.

“We believe that these men might have important information which could help with our enquiries, therefore, I would ask them to come forward to police.”

DI McMillan said the woman attacked is being supported and moved to reassure the public that this was an isolated incident.

“This has been a very traumatic incident for the victim and we have been ensuring she is receiving the support she requires at this time,” he added.

“We appreciate that residents may be worried, however, we would like to reassure members of the community that this is an isolated incident and crimes of this type are thankfully rare.

“We are working to identify the person responsible and are keen to seek the assistance of the public.

“In the meantime, additional uniformed patrols will continue and anyone who has any information can speak to any local officer or contact 101. Information can also be passed to Crimestoppers via 0800 555 111.”
