Cruise can’t save reboot
The Mummy (15)
This uneven, mediocre and, at times, downright dull romp is a poor start for Universal’s new Dark Universe series.
Tom Cruise is fine as the Indiana Jones-esque lead; it’s everything else that’s the problem. Sofia Boutella’s monster lacks menace and fully-fleshed characters take a back seat to wonky magic and sloppy scripting.
Cult of Chucky (18)
The demon doll’s seventh outing is one of his worst, and strangest, yet.
Despite being inexplicably given previously unseen powers, Chucky feels more tired than ever and his targets look like they’d rather be elsewhere.
The unbalanced plot hurtles towards an ending that teases a more intriguing eighth entry.
Gifted (12)
Drama Gifted marks a real change of pace for Chris ‘Captain America’ Evans as he plays a man drawn into a bitter custody battle with his mum over his maths genius niece Mary (Mckenna Grace).
After being burned in the blockbuster world with the Amazing Spider-Man flicks, Marc Webb returns to the indie world and while he doesn’t hit his 500 Days of Summer heights, his latest survives the unwelcome comparisons to five-time Oscar winner Kramer vs. Kramer.
It’s an endearing-but-predictable family drama with Evans and Grace’s believable bond the highlight.
And the problem-solving abilities of Grace’s human calculator are never allowed to travel over our heads.
