- Nicola Findlay

Police yesterday said they were treating the death of a 36-yearold man found in an East Kilbride house as “unexplained”.

The grim discovery was made when officers forced their way into the property in Lyttleton, Westwood shortly before 8.30pm on Monday.

A probe is currently underway and the deceased man has not yet been named by police.

Shocked neighbours told the News they saw officers use a battering ram to gain entry to the house, with at least four police cars parked outside.

One resident told the News: “Whatever has happened it’s a real tragedy.

“This street used to be a bit wild but things had calmed down and I think everyone is really shocked by this. My heart goes out to the man’s family.”

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “A post-mortem examination will take place in due course to establish exact cause of death.

“However, police are treating the death as unexplained at this time. A report will be sent to the procurator fiscal.”

The body of a 36-year-old man was discovered by police after they broke down the door of a house in Westwood.

A probe has now been launched following the grim find in Lyttleton on Monday night and police say they are treating the death as “unexplained”.

Shocked neighbours saw police cars and an ambulance race to the property before officers used a battering ram to gain entry.

Forensic officers were also at the scene on Monday night carrying out investigations and uniformed officers conducted door-to-door enquiries.

The deceased hasn’t yet been named but neighbours say the man hadn’t lived in the street for long and “kept himself to himself ”.

One neighbour told the News: “I was sitting watching the television when I heard a lot of commotion outside and flashing lights.

“The next thing there were a series of almighty bangs and I wondered what on earth was happening.

“I looked outside and I saw police with a battering ram forcing their way into the house and about four police cars outside.

“An ambulance arrived but then left and there were forensic guys in their white suits who went in and out the house.”

The resident added: “The police came round all the doors and asked about a fight in the garden on Sunday, so I don’t know if that was related in any way.

“Whatever has happened, it’s a real tragedy.

“This street used to be a bit wild but things had calmed down and I think everyone is really shocked by this — my heart goes out to the man’s family.”

Another Lyttleton resident said: “I heard the sirens and saw the police cars fly up the road.

“I then heard that a man’s body had been found in a house.

“It’s not what I would expect but it seems to be a young guy who has died so it’s just awful, especially for his family.”

A third neighbour added: “I saw all the police activity on Monday night and knew something had happened but I was shocked when I heard a body was found.”

A spokesperson for Police Scotland said: “About 8.25pm on Monday night, the body of a 36-year-old man was discovered within a home in Lyttleton, East Kilbride.

“A post-mortem examination will take place in due course to establish exact cause of death.

“However, police are treating the death as unexplained at this time.

“A report will be sent to the procurator fiscal.”
