MPillfor Universal Credit motion
Dr Lisa Cameron has vowed to continue to fight against Universal Credit – despite missing a vote in the House of Commons.
The East Kilbride, Strathaven and Lesmahagow MP could note attend the vote, which saw a pause in the roll-out of the controversial benefit system, due to illness.
MPs unanimously backed a motion to halt welfare reforms. However, nearly all Conservative and DUP MPs abstained.
The EK job centre introduced the Universal Credit system in October.
Dr Cameron said: “I took ill during parliamentary duties and the whips office were made aware.”
She added: “My voting record is higher than that of all other opposition MPs across South Lanarkshire and also [Labour leader] Jeremy Corbyn. I continue to fight the injustices of Universal Credit in parliament”. Factory workers from East Kilbride teamed up with Special Olympics athletes for a fundraising sports tournament.
Coca-Cola European Partners (CCEP), in partnership with Special Olympics Great Britain (SOGB), brought together colleagues at its local manufacturing sites for the business’s annual unified sports competition near its factory in Morpeth, Northumberland.
A team from East Kilbride joined participants from CCEP’s Morpeth and Wakefield sites, as well as athletes with intellectual disabilities from Special Olympics clubs to compete in six-a-side football, badminton, boccia, carpet bowls and swimming.
A total of £200 was raised by volunteers through a raffle and tombola, shared between Northumberland Special Olympics, Gateshead Special Olympics and West of Scotland Special Olympics.
John McCafferty, operations director at CCEP East Kilbride, said: “We’re pleased to be part of the unified sports tournament for the fourth year.” All set
