Lottery cash will help tots get arty

Welcome boost for nursery from Awards for All

- Nicola Findlay

Animal-mad tots in East Kilbride are being invited to snap up a free afternoon of fun thanks to lottery funding.

Kiwi pre-school playgroup, a non-profit making organisation based in St Kenneth’s Primary School, secured cash from The Big Lottery Fund’s Awards for All programme.

And they will work with experts from the town’s Cafe Ceramico to paint animal-shaped mugs, T-shirts and masks.

Part of the award is aimed at working with the community.

The sessions on Wednesday, November 22 and Monday, November 27, which will run from 1pm until 2.30pm, are open to children who are preparing to start nursery in 2018.

They will give kids a chance to have fun and see what nursery life is all about and there will be a variety of animal products on offer from sharks to penguins.

Kiwi chairman Rebecca Hay said: “Children at Kiwi are animaldaft and we applied for money from the lottery so we could spend 12 months learning as much as we could about them while having fun too.

“The sessions with Cafe Ceramico are open to children aged two years and nine months upwards who are going to nursery next year and will give them a chance to see what life at Kiwi is like and be creative at the same time.

“There is no charge but places are limited and children need to be accompanied by an adult.”

The Big Lottery Fund awarded Kiwi £3260 and so far the children have enjoyed a visit from the Little Fawn travelling puppet company and are due to go to Almond Valley farm park next summer.

As part of their current activities, the kids are learning how the emergency services work and there was great delight when firefighters from East Kilbride visited the nursery.

They were shown the fire engine and enjoyed creating rainbows in the sky using the water hose.

“The children had a wonderful time and the firefighters were so kind and patient,” added Rebecca.

“Thanks must go to station commander Eddie Kelly for organising the visit.”
