40 YEARS AGO
Shop stewards at the Rolls-Royce factory in East Kilbride held an emergency meeting following a decision by management to close the factory unless an overtime ban was called off. The ban was imposed in support of a 25 per cent wage claim but the management of the company, which was government owned, said they couldn’t breach a 10 per cent limit.
A proposal for a play area in Reith Drive in The Murray was turned down by a district council committee despite a community council survey indicating that the local residents were three to one in favour of it. A councillor said the site for the proposed play area was totally unsuitable as it was too near The Murray Road.
30 YEARS AGO
A leading Japanese company was set to invest £27 million in a new manufacturing plant in East Kilbride, creating 650 jobs. Scottish secretary Malcolm Rifkind said it was “an early Christmas present” for the town.
Two Labour councillors were rejected as candidates in district council elections. Members decided against re-selecting councillors John Buchanan and Peter McGregor.
20 YEARS AGO
A group of pupils from an East Kilbride secondary school were proving to be in a league of their own when it came to investment. For the team of 16- and 17-yearolds from Duncanrig topped the table in a national investment campaign project.
Once again the News’s ever -generous readers did the paper proud as hundred of toys poured in for the annual Christmas toy appeal. It was launched in conjunction with East Kilbride’s Women’s Aid and the town’s Christian Omega charity.
