Singer Rebekah makes Celtic connection next

- Jonathan Geddes

A teenage singer-songwriter from Cambuslang has just played one of Scotland’s most famous venues - and she has got one of the country’s biggest festivals up next.

Rebekah Kirk took to the stage at the iconic King Tut’s Wah Wah Hut recently, where she supported the singer Kerri Watt. And the songstress, who is a fan of indie and alternative music, recently won a Danny Kyle Award at the Paisley Spree, which means she has been invited to perform at next year’s Celtic Connections festival in January. Rebekah told the Ticket: “King Tut’s was really good, such a great experience.

“I’ve been there for a few gigs so it was really nice to be actually playing there and on the other side of it.

“Kerri was such a nice person to talk to and the whole atmosphere was great. I’d love to play there again.”

Now she is looking ahead to a show as part of Celtic Connections, the January roots and folk music bash that will see hundreds of performers descend on Glasgow for over two weeks worth of shows and workshops.

Rebekah will play at the Danny Kyle Open Stage, the nightly event that aims to showcase fresh and emerging talent.

She attracted the attention of organisers after a performance at the Paisley Spree.

She explained: “It was a bit of a shock to be told I’d won, because I just thought it was a gig, not a competition.

“Then Liz Clark, who organises the open stage, told me I was one of the three winners.

“I’m really excited to be playing a big festival like Celtic, where there’s so many other acts all performing.”

Rebekah is also hoping to work towards making an EP within the next year.

She added: “I’ve been awarded a grant of £2,500 for winning the Jim Diamond award.

“He was a musician who always supported Clyde Radio’s Cash 4 Kids and after he passed away in 2015 his family decided to support new music with a grant, and I’m going to use the grant to work on an EP.”

Rebekah will collect the prize, and perform at the Cash For Kids event at the Hilton on December 15.

Celtic Connections, which first started in 1994, will take place at a variety of venues across Glasgow from January 18 to February 4.
