Do you agree with a plastics crackdown? News readers have their say on big debate

- Mark Pirie

Plans have been launched by the European Union to make every piece of plastic on the continent recyclable or reusable by 2030.

The waste of plastics on every-day products has been brought into focus by the likes of David Attenborough’s BBC programme Blue Planet.

The News took to the streets to see what East Kilbride residents thought of the issue.

George Walker from East Mains said: “Some things they wrap up in plastic are ridiculous. It wasn’t too long ago that I saw a coconut wrapped up in plastic – and it’s just a coconut!

“Somebody needs to let people know the impact that plastics can have and what can be recycled.”

Geralyn Walker, also from East Mains, added: “I remember when you picked up your vegetables and used to just have a paper bag but there are also issues with that.”

Westwood resident Carol Spier feels more could be done and said: “They definitely could have less packaging.

“With some products there is so much that is completely useless and doesn’t seem to actually do anything to protect items like food.”

James McFarlane from Calderwood added: “You watch programmes with David Attenborough and it shows you the impact of plastics and not recycling can have.

“People need to realise that a plastic bag can last for 100 years.”
