Selfish drivers could be caught on camera Safety concerns raised

- Nicola Findlay

Drivers flouting a one-way system are being warned they will soon be caught on camera.

Despite signs on Maxwell Drive in the Village, police say thoughtless motorists eager to take a short cut are simply ignoring instructions.

And East Mains Community Council say the ongoing issue has caused numerous near misses and accidents in the area.

East Mains Community Council chair Bill Arthur told the News: “This has been going on for some time and we have real safety concerns. It’s only a matter of time before there is a serious accident.”

The community council called on South Lanarkshire Council to point a CCTV camera already in the area towards Maxwell Drive in a bid to catch out careless drivers.

And Labour’s East Kilbride Central North councillor Joe Fagan confirmed that, following talks with officials, action will now be taken.

He said: “I have been working with the community council on this issue since my election last May and in that time we have been able to ensure that some of the signage is repaired and brought up to standard.

“However, I think we all accept that there is still more to do.

“I have asked the council to look at using existing CCTV to identify breaches of the one-way restrictions and to consider again whether additional signage is required and I can confirm officers have agreed to this.”

PC Ian Peebles from East Kilbride police office said: “Drivers are ignoring the one-way signs and regulations in order to use this route as a short cut.

“Police Scotland would remind drivers that the signs are there for the safety of pedestrians and other road users and as such any drivers failing to adhere to these directional signs run a real risk of prosecution.”
