Freezing weather doesn’t stop hikers

- Terry McGeary

Recent severe weather led to Our Lady of Lourdes Hiking Club making a lastminute decision to take their latest outing down a level from the proposed trek through the Campsies by Dumgoyne hill.

The change to a pleasant – if often icy – walk down the final leg of the West Highland Way to Milngavie didn’t disappoint the hikers, however, as it resulted in a combined levels ‘club’ walk with exceptional views of the snowy top of Dumgoyne in bright, sunny conditions.

The day started with a coach stop at Dobbies Garden Centre in Milngavie before a drop-off at another garden centre on the A82 just south of Killearn; an ideal starting point as the combined John Muir Way and West Highland Way pass right through it.

The way-marked route afforded the 28-strong group superb views of Dumgoyne, neighbouring Dumfoyn, and the Strathblane hills as it meandered around Dumgoyach and down to frozen Carbeth Loch where a spot was identified nearby as ideal for getting the flasks and sandwiches out.

The group strolled through Mugdock Country Park into Milngavie a couple of kilometres later where the social hour was spent in the West Highland Gate Beefeater before home.

The next sign-up for a walk in the Devil’s Beef Tub/Moffat area on Saturday, February 17 will be on Thursday, February 8 at 7.30pm in the upstairs lounge of Our Lady of Lourdes RC church hall in The Murray. New members will be made very welcome.

Each trip features a lower-level walk at a more relaxed pace and a high-level hike for those interested in testing themselves a little bit more. Visit www. ololhikingclub.co.uk, call (01355) 222464 or go along to the sign-up evening.
