Independent retailers flock to Strathaven
Number two ranking in Scotland
Strathaven is second-best in Scotland when it comes to the number of independent retailers operating in the town, according to a new study.
The Local Data Company (LDC) and the University of Stirling found that the Avondale town is one of just four locations in the country with an independent retailer rate above 80 per cent.
Gourock in Inverclyde was in first place with a rate of 84.6 per cent.
Research by the Federation of Small Businesses (FSB) also found that Strathaven has one of the highest percentage of self-employment in South Lanarkshire – 8.7 per cent.
Strathaven’s independent retailer rate of 82.4 per cent stayed at the same level between 2016 and 2017.
Andy Aird, leader of FSB in Lanarkshire, said: “Strathaven has a thriving business community which is full of small independent firms and these figures prove that it is very much the case.
“Small independent firms are vital to the health and success of local high streets. They create uniqueness and character of our town centres, whilst helping make the local economy more diverse and resilient.
“It is pleasing not only to see Strathaven among Scotland’s top independent towns, but also to know the town has maintained its independent rate, despite many challenges such as online shopping and out-of-town retail parks.”
Mr Aird added: “Strathaven’s business community will be looking to the Glasgow City Deal to hit the ground running and give them a boost.”
East Kilbride, Strathaven and Lesmahagow MP Dr Lisa Cameron added: “I am delighted that Strathaven has a small business community that is prospering with the independent retailer rate well above 80 per cent.
“There is a uniqueness about Strathaven; that makes the high street of Strathaven individual in what it has to offer people.
“I am pleased that Local Data Company in partnership with the University of Stirling researched has shown a high percentage of selfemployment in the town. This shows just the type of spirit that made Harris Farm Meats a winner of my small business award this year.”
The annual report by LDC and the University of Stirling reveals the latest figures of Scotland’s towns and cities including the number of retail premises, the vacancy rates and persistent vacancy levels and the retail structure.
