Free Brazilian jiu-jitsu classes are on offer

- Kirsten McStay

A jiu-jitsu coach is running free classes for anyone battling mental health issues in East Kilbride.

Chris Fisher wants to make a difference and give back to the community.

As a mental health sufferer himself, he knows how much jiujitsu helped him and that’s why he wants to assist others.

He feels that Brazilian jiu-jitsu is especially useful because it helps people learn to be comfortable in uncomfortable situations.

According to experts, this important lesson is crucial for people who live with conditions such as social anxiety.

Chris said: “A subject close to my heart is mental health which I’ve suffered from and still do.

“It’s not easy but in my experience being around welcoming, friendly, caring people helped – but most of all Brazilian jiu-jitsu helped me.

“It taught me to understand how valuable I was and how much I could achieve not only on the mat, but in life.

“For that reason I’m offering free training to anyone suffering from any form of mental heath – come along to Brazilian jiu-jitsu and train for free as much as you want.

“You have my word that it will be the best decision you will ever make.”

Brazilian jiu-jitsu promotes the concept that a smaller, weaker person can successfully defend themselves or another against a bigger, stronger, heavier assailant by using proper technique, leverage and, most notably, taking the fight to the ground then applying joint locks and choke holds to defeat the opponent.

The academy is located above the St Andrew’s Hospice shop on Quarry Street in Hamilton.

Anybody interested in the Sunday class which runs from 1pm to 2pm can contact Chris at ekbrazilianjiujitsu@gmail.com or visit the page www.facebook.com/ Eastkilbridebjj/

Arrangements can also be made for people with transport issues from East Kilbride.
