POTHOLE PATROL

Help identify problem routes

- Mark Pirie

Motorists everywhere are sick of the sight of them.

Now residents in East Kilbride and Avondale have been urged to go on pothole patrol following the winter thaw.

Council chiefs have called for the public to help as they begin road repairs after weeks of ice and snow caused damage.

Gordon Mackay, South Lanarkshire Council’s head of roads and transportation, says they will act quickly if alerted to road or lighting issues.

He told the News: “The council undertake regular safety inspections on all our roads. Defects identified during these inspections are repaired as necessary.

“The level of repairs undertaken each year will fluctuate, often as a consequence of the severity of winter weather conditions in any particular year.

“However, the condition of our road network is surveyed annually, as it is for all 32 council areas, and these surveys confirm that South Lanarkshire’s road network has improved year-on-year for the last seven years.

“Freeze and thaw conditions do increase the risk of damage to road surfaces occurring and I would take this opportunity to highlight that road or lighting faults can be reported via the council’s website.”

East Kilbride SNP MSP Linda Fabiani says people can contact their local councillor if they don’t feel an issue has been addressed.

She said: “Given the recent weather has affected a number of our roads, any constituent enquiries regarding potholes should be addressed directly to South Lanarkshire Council.

“There is a standard form to report non-emergency road faults and the council should respond as quickly as possible.

“If constituents still have problems after reporting a problem, local councillors and my office will always try to help.”
