Six drivers were arrested in connection with drink or drug driving offences on East Kilbride’s roads during the annual festive crackdown.

Three people were allegedly caught driving under the influence of alcohol while it’s claimed three more failed a drug test.

Five men – aged 28, 33, 40, 38 and 49 – and one woman, aged 43, have all been reported to the procurator fiscal.

The highest reading was six times over the legal drink-drive limit of 22mcg of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath. The lowest recorded was four times over.

Inspector Aidan Higgins insists one drink driver on the road is one too many.

He said: “Too many people are willing to get behind the wheel of a motor vehicle whilst intoxicated through drink or drugs, including driving the following morning after consuming alcohol the night before.

“This is completely unacceptable and such motorists are a danger to all road users and pedestrians as well as the individual themselves.

“The consequences and penalties for driving under the influence of drink or drugs can be life-changing.

“My message to the public is very simple: do not drive whilst impaired through alcohol or drugs.

“Police Scotland will target those who do in order to keep our roads and communities safe.”

If you are caught drink or drug driving, you could be disqualified for a minimum period of 12 months, face a heavy fine, have a criminal record for a lengthy period and face having your vehicle seized.

Members of the public who have concerns about others who drive while intoxicated through alcohol or drugs are urged to contact police on 101 or call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
