Grand gestureDr Blacklaw Primary pupils’grand gesture raised money for impoverished children in Ghana.

Kids filled Smartie sweetie tubes with 20 pence pieces for the school pupil council’s ‘Loose Change Changes Lives’campaign – and collected a whopping £1000.

The cash will benefit African students Comfort and Joyce through the school’s eight-year sponsorship programme with the Let Us Shine charity and will provide the girls with education, accommodation, clothing, school supplies, three hot meals a day and healthcare.

Let Us Shine was founded by East Kilbride pharmacist Fiona Mawuena, who built a boarding school for poverty-stricken girls in Kpandai in 2007. The topperforming facility now supports 200 girls.

Dr Mary Higgins from the charity thanked the school for its generosity. East Kilbride’s Torrance Hotel scooped three accolades at the Regional Scottish Hotel Awards.

The hotel won prizes for the Glasgow and Clyde area in the boutique hotel and classic hotel bar categories with the food and beverage team scooping a ‘people of excellence’ award.

The awards were presented at a regional event held at the Blythswood Square Hotel in Glasgow which celebrated the achievements of the area’s best hotels.

The Village hotel now moves on as a national nominee at an awards bash on Sunday, April 22 at Edinburgh’s Sheraton Grand Hotel & Spa.

Kathleen Swallow, general manager of The Torrance Hotel, said: “We’re delighted to win these awards.

“We have a great team at The Torrance Hotel and we are continually striving to offer our customers the best and experience.”
