On the wrong track? Figures released by Strathclyde Partnership for Transport (SPT) which showed a decline of 200,000 passengers using East Kilbride, Hairmyres and Thorntonhall rail stations prompted reaction.

Caroline Hagen said:“I’ve not stopped using trains. Way too expensive, though.”

Kieran Docherty said: “Trains are unreliable and too expensive but to be honest the buses are getting that way too.”

Linda Paterson Boyle said: “I now drive into Glasgow as it’s more reliable than the train.”

And Ivana Chalmers added: “Parking issues at both stations. Need better park-and-ride facilities!”

MK Devlin offered a suggestion which would require investment and said: “Hairmyers train station is no longer fit for purpose, mostly due to parking issues.

“I suggest a new station maybe 400-500 metres along the track with more parking.”

Isabel Braidwood said: “If they stopped fare increase more people would use the train.”

Tam Robb said: “If a service is so bad and expensive, people will simply use another service.”

Raymond Torley was puzzled by the results and said: “Don’t know where they get this from.”

Jacqui Morris held a similar view, saying: “If anything the trains seem to be getting busier and it’s often standing-room only from Hairmyres.”

Elaine Cavanagh said: “Lack of sufficient park-and-ride facilities.”
