Funding boost for community groups
Backing from Cala
Two East Kilbride community groups have received a funding boost through the Lanarkshire community bursary fund.
The Cala Homes-funded grant saw a total of £1250 handed over to East Kilbride Men’s Shed and the Dementia Carers Group.
East Kilbride Men’s Shed – who received £500 – is a community grassroots-run workshop and social space that allows for the pursuit of activities of a practical nature.
The group applied for funding in order to buy a new chuck for their woodworking lathe and will contribute towards a wood planer.
Derek Miller, chairman at East Kilbride Men’s Shed, said: “We intend to improve our members’ physical and emotional health in addition to their well-being by coming together, working on projects of their choosing and building relationships with each other.
“Grant assistance is crucial to enable organisations like us to survive the early days to become better established”.
East Kilbride Dementia Carers Group also received £750 from CALA’s Lanarkshire bursary that will be put towards a new minibus for taking the service users on day trips.
Brian Doig, group co-ordinator at East Kilbride Dementia Carers Group, said: “The donation from Cala Homes will be put to good use in the work of the Dementia Carers Group, as we strive to continue providing a quality service to people with dementia and their carers. We simply cannot survive without public support.
“Replacing our mini-bus will cost us £35,300, but a reliable bus is vital as we take people on over 300 trips and outings each year.”
Josh Hollywood from Cala Homes added: “I’m very proud Cala Homes (West) has been able to make a contribution towards providing these services.”
